Bonaparte's Cave State Forest

For a while I have scouted the Bonaparte's Cave State Forest because I love finding random caves or just hidden gems in general.  About a month ago, I finally came across where this actual opening was with a brief history explaining the state park name.  Needless to say, once I had the coordinates, we headed out to find this historic cave.

I did a little more research to see how we could get the closest to the entrance without having to navigate the dense forest the entire way.  The New York Department of Environmental Conservation publishes really great maps for almost all of the state forest.

We parked at the Green Pond Trail Parking area and did the open hike to the fishing pier.  This spot had such a beautiful overview of the pond.

We worked our way around the South side of the pond to the cave entrance pin I had.  Needless to say, it was not an easy hike.  We had to cross a boot-sucking, mud spot that was full of clams (going back to try and collect some maybe).

It took us a good bit to make it around, but it was completely worth it.  Look at this entrance!

As it always goes, we found a much more accessible trail that brought us directly to the road.  It was much easier to walk to the car that way.  We were very grateful to hit the road, was you can see.

If you want to check out this entrance, I recommend entering from these grid coordinates [44.156270, -75.371543].  There was a walking stick stuck in the ground making this spot when we went.
